Google crushed the dreams of Android users who got elated with reports about a possible Dark Mode. Last year, a Google Issue Tracker thread hinted at the company working on a Dark Mode which is known to enhance battery life on Android phones with OLED screens. Recently, the thread was re-opened with Google marking the issue as ‘fixed’. However, by ‘fixed’ the company is not exactly referring to the feature being finally developed for the masses.

Google Dark Mode is 'not' Coming to Android

According to The Verge, Google said that an employee mistakenly marked it the issue as fixed. The employee had mistakenly noted that the “engineering team has added this feature,” and that “it will be available in a future Android release.”

However, Google clarified it by saying that, “Unfortunately, this bug was closed prematurely due to a miscommunication with the team that handles AOSP issues,” further adding, “What we have added in a future Android release is a developer-facing setting (via Developer Options) to toggle the -dark UI mode qualifier, which will make it easier for developers to create and test apps that implement dark mode.”

So essentially, there will not be any Night Mode or Dark Mode for Android phones, but for developers who can build apps which use the theme. For those who really want to experience the easy on the eyes mode, the low-key dark mode is the option which was exclusive to Pixel 2. It allows you to change the theme from light to dark based on the wallpaper.

Apple iOS, on the other hand, now comes with a smart invert color option which turns the UI into the dark mode by keeping icon colors intact and other elements such as in-app menu, settings, and more in a dark theme.
